What makes it different

Not all leather is equal

“Genuine leather” sounds like a promise, but it is one of the lowest grades you can buy. The grade — which layer of the hide is used — decides how a wallet wears, how it ages and how long it lasts. We only use the top layer: full grain.

Lifespans are typical for a wallet carried every day and will vary with care and use.

01 — The hide

Full-grain cowhide

Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide, left exactly as it grew. Nothing is sanded away, so it keeps the tightest, strongest fibres — and the natural marks that make every wallet a little different.

  • Densest fibres, so it resists tearing and stretching
  • Natural markings left intact — no two wallets are identical
  • Breathes and softens with use instead of cracking

02 — The tannage

Vegetable-tanned, the slow way

Most leather today is chrome-tanned in a matter of hours. Ours is vegetable-tanned with natural plant tannins over weeks — an older, slower process that gives the leather a firm hand, a warm natural scent and the ability to deepen in colour as you carry it.

  • Tanned with plant tannins from tree bark
  • Firm at first, then moulds to your cards and pocket
  • Ages into a patina that is yours alone

03 — The patina

Better at year two than day one

Patina is the deep, glossy tone full-grain leather develops from light, handling and time. Drag the slider to compare the same wallet brand new and after two years of everyday carry.

Leather care

A little care goes a long way

Full-grain leather needs very little from you. A few habits keep it supple and looking its best for years.

  • Wipe with a dry, soft cloth to lift dust and marks
  • Condition every 6–12 months with a leather balm
  • If it gets wet, let it air-dry away from direct heat
  • Don’t overstuff it — it keeps its slim shape

What is full-grain leather?

Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide with its natural grain left intact — nothing is sanded or buffed away. It has the densest, strongest fibres of any grade and is the only leather that develops a true patina.

Is full-grain better than top-grain or genuine leather?

For a wallet you carry every day, yes. Top-grain has its surface sanded off and re-embossed, so it is weaker and wears rather than ages. “Genuine leather” comes from lower split layers under a painted coating that cracks and peels over time. See the comparison table above for the full breakdown.

What does vegetable-tanned mean?

Tanning turns raw hide into leather. Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins from tree bark and plants over several weeks, instead of the chromium salts used in fast industrial tanning. The result is firmer, more natural-smelling leather that darkens and deepens with use.

Will my wallet change colour?

Yes — gradually, and for the better. Sunlight, handling and the natural oils from your hands darken the leather and give it a soft sheen, called patina. Lighter colours change the most; darker colours deepen more subtly.

Why are there small marks or variations on the leather?

Because full-grain leather is left uncorrected, it keeps the natural character of the hide: small scars, grain variation and slight differences in tone. They are a sign of real full-grain leather, not a defect, and they make each wallet one of a kind.

Does full-grain leather need breaking in?

A little. Vegetable-tanned leather starts firm and structured. After a week or two of daily carry it softens and moulds to your cards and pocket.
